How to pass a prop firm challenge: rules and risk

Which prop firm rules to read before you start, why the strategy needs an edge, which risk per trade to pick — a model of the odds of reaching the target before the limit — and why challenges fail.

In short. A challenge is passed not with a better setup but with three things: the strategy has an edge, the risk per trade is small, and you know all the program rules, not just the loss limits. The model below shows that with a slightly positive strategy and 0.5% risk, the chance of reaching the target before the limit is about 97%, but it takes about a hundred trades. Without an edge the chance is roughly 55% at any risk from 0.5% to 2%: the challenge becomes a coin toss.

Step 1. Read all the rules, not just the limits

RuleWhat to find out
Profit targethow many percent per phase
Daily loss limitfrom balance or equity, at what time the day starts
Overall loss limitstatic from the start or trailing behind the account peak
Minimum trading days and time limitwhether they exist and what counts as a trading day
Newswhether opening and closing trades around major news is prohibited
Weekends and overnightwhether positions may be held over the weekend
EAs and copyingwhether EAs, trade copying and high-frequency trading are allowed
Profit consistencywhether a rule limits the share of a single day in the total profit

Each firm has its own set and numbers, and they change — check the rules of your program. How the daily and overall limits work and how much to risk per trade is covered in «Prop firm risk management» and «Trailing vs static drawdown».

Step 2. Make sure the strategy has an edge

Before the challenge, calculate the strategy's expectancy in R over at least 50–100 trades — on demo or on your own account. If it is near zero, no risk management will help: the limits only decide how fast the attempt ends. How to calculate it — in «Trading expectancy».

Step 3. Choose the risk per trade

The model: target +8%, overall limit −10% from the start (static), risk per trade a fixed percentage of the starting balance, win rate 45%, wins 1.5 times the losses (expectancy +0.125 R). Without an edge — a 40% win rate with the same 1.5 R wins (expectancy 0). Touching the limit is a fail. The daily limit is ignored and trades are independent — it is a model, not a forecast.

Only an edge raises the chance noticeably: with it, lower risk takes the chance from 72.4% to 96.7%; without it, from 54.1% to 55.2% — about 55% at any of these risks. The numbers come from the same model as the table above and the prop challenge simulator — a model, not a forecast; the median trades to target are for the strategy with an edge.

The lower the risk, the higher the chance to pass, but the more trades and time it takes. If the program has a time limit, estimate how many trades you will actually take in it and pick the lowest risk at which you make it. Plug your own numbers into the prop challenge simulator: it computes the chance of reaching the target before the limit with the same model — for your risk, win rate, average win in R, daily limit and time limit.

Step 4. Run the phase by the plan

  • trade only the setups in your plan — a challenge is not the time to experiment;
  • do not raise risk when the target is «almost there» or when the phase is going badly — that is an easy way to lose the phase in its last days;
  • keep your own daily stop stricter than the firm's limit;
  • target reached — stop; if a minimum number of trading days is required, fill them with minimum-size trades;
  • in the next phase — the same discipline; check its target and limits in the phase rules.

A pre-trade checklist is in «Trading plan: template and checklist».

Why challenges fail

  • size goes up after losses to win the money back faster;
  • several positions on correlated instruments — the real risk is higher than calculated;
  • floating loss is forgotten when the daily limit is measured on equity;
  • rules nobody read are broken: news, weekends, a prohibited EA;
  • most of the profit comes in one day where a consistency rule applies.

How Davinchu helps pass a phase

In the account settings pick the «Prop Firm» mode and set the stage, profit target, daily and overall loss limits — the account page shows how far you are from the target and from the limits. Set the daily stop-loss, maximum drawdown, risk per trade and trades per day in the risk manager stricter than the firm's rules: the T-Manager EA in MetaTrader 5 counts them across the whole account and at 100% closes new entries through its panel before a firm rule is broken. In the trading journal the «Review» tab counts the «Cost of violations» — what off-plan trades cost you. More on the «Davinchu for prop traders» page.
